Protagonist, čiji lik tumači Dan Dailey, je mladić iz gradića u Zapadnoj Virdžiniji koji se nakon napada na Pearl Harbor kao dobrovoljac prijavi u Zračne snage Vojske SAD, ali, na njegovo veliko razočaranje, gotovo cijeli rat provodi u pozadini. Radnja prikazuje kako sticajem okolnosti ipak završi u borbi, odnosno u okupiranoj Francuskoj, ali kako u njegove ratne pustolovine nitko ne želi vjerovati. When Willie Comes Marching Home je bio prikazan na filmskom festivalu u Locarnu gdje je osvojio Zlatni leopard.
